THE THIRD ANCAP SUMMER SCHOOL TPRI, ARUSHA, 2004

The third summer school was again, successfully held at TPRI, Arusha from the 2^nd to the 6^th of August 2004.The school this time was a series of lectures given by three eminent scientists:

• Prof. Henrik Kylin - Sweden
• Prof. Henk Bowman - South Africa
• Prof. Nabil Bashir - Sudan.

The topics covered were wide ranging as shown below:

• Ecosystems – abiotic (soil, water, air), biotic (plants and animals);

• Food webs, Biodiversity, Functions of the ecosystem,

• Pollution: Causes and Effects – Green house gases,

• Endocrine disruptors, Dioxins & Furans, PCBs.,

• Analysis and monitoring; Obsolete pesticides, Remediation, Global fate of semi-volatile organic compounds (Behaviour of environmental pollutants, Multi-media models based on fugacity).

• Pesticides: definition, types, names, formulations and toxicity.

• The Stockholm Convention on POPs;

• Analytical methods mainly chromatography and spectrometry.

• DDT and Malaria;

• Pesticide Toxicology; Discussed about Risk Assessment: -Problem formulation, -Risk assessment-hazard identification, risk estimation; -Risk management (Decision, Regulation, More research).

• The participants visited the analytical laboratories at TPRI.
