THE
THIRD ANCAP SUMMER SCHOOL TPRI, ARUSHA, 2004
The
third summer school was again, successfully held at TPRI, Arusha from the 2nd
to the 6th of August 2004.The school this time was a series of
lectures given by three eminent scientists:
- Prof.
Henrik Kylin - Sweden
- Prof.
Henk Bowman - South Africa
- Prof.
Nabil Bashir - Sudan.
The
topics covered were wide ranging as shown below:

Ecosystems Ð abiotic (soil, water, air), biotic (plants and
animals);

Food webs, Biodiversity, Functions of the ecosystem,

Pollution: Causes and Effects Ð Green house gases,

Endocrine disruptors, Dioxins & Furans, PCBs.,

Analysis and monitoring; Obsolete pesticides, Remediation,
Global fate of semi-volatile organic compounds (Behaviour of environmental
pollutants, Multi-media models based on fugacity).

Pesticides: definition, types, names, formulations and
toxicity.

The Stockholm Convention on POPs;

Analytical methods mainly chromatography and spectrometry.

DDT and Malaria;

Pesticide Toxicology; Discussed about Risk Assessment:
-Problem formulation, -Risk assessment-hazard identification, risk estimation;
-Risk management (Decision, Regulation, More research).

The participants visited the analytical laboratories at
TPRI.
